This Malacanang Palace handout taken on March 23, 2009 shows former British prime minister Tony Blair (L) meeting with Philippine President Gloria Arroyo (R) at the presidential security compound in Manila. Philippine President Gloria Arroyo sought the advice of Britain's former prime minister Tony Blair on bringing peace to the south of the country after decades of separatist bloodshed. The pair discussed the problems in Mindanao, where a violent Muslim insurgency has raged for 30 years, over lunch at the presidential palace, a spokeswoman for Arroyo said. Blair, who is credited with bringing peace to Northern Ireland and is now envoy to the Middle East for the United States, Russia, the United Nations and the European Union, was in Manila for a speaking engagement.
