Freed convicted soldier Ernesto Mateo embraces his grandsom Mathew Mateo upon the release of ten soldiers, jailed at the national penitentiary in Muntinlupa suburban Manila on March 4, 2009 for the 1983 murder of Philippine democracy leader Benigno 'Ninoy' Aquino. The emotional soldiers walked free after nearly 26 years in jail when President Gloria Arroyo granted clemency. A court convicted 16 soldiers for Aquino's murder. Two of them died in jail. Aquino, the outspoken arch-foe of then-dictator Ferdinand Marcos, was gunned down as he arrived from exile in the United States, triggering widespread public outrage. AFP PHOTO/JAY DIRECTO |
